Update on Rossall pipeline upgrade
Work is progressing on a project to construct a new pipeline which will improve resilience of the wastewater network across the Fylde and Wyre coast.
The new pipeline will extend from Fleetwood Wastewater Treatment Works to the promenade off Westway. It will take treated wastewater from Fleetwood Wastewater Treatment Works to the promenade where it will connect into the existing outfall pipe.
Simon Holding who heads up wastewater treatment services for United Utilities in Lancashire explained: “Across the North West we are investing £13.5 billion to build new infrastructure, improve water quality, replace pipelines, and enhance more than 500km of rivers and bathing waters.
“This pipeline project will play an important role in increasing the resilience of the wastewater network in the area.”
Preparatory works are currently being carried out for the installation of the pipeline. As it follows a route through Broadwater Wood some tree clearance works are necessary to ensure the area is accessible for the heavy goods vehicles that will be used during the construction.
Any trees that are removed will be replaced once construction is completed.
Simon Holding added: “We are working closely with Wyre Borough Council to agree a plan which will replace any trees and shrubs that have been removed and ensure that the local habitat is enhanced. Both the tree removal and habitat enhancement works will be carried out during the winter months to avoid the bird nesting season.”
Councillor Roger Berry, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety at Wyre Council, said: “Wyre Council recognises that these works are essential and that United Utilities is required to carry them out to upgrade the resilience of the wastewater network. We are working closely with United Utilities to ensure the environmental impact is minimised, and we look forward to receiving the detailed proposals for replanting and the additional restoration measures that will be required so Broadwater Wood is restored and enhanced for the long term. These will be vital in ensuring that Broadwater Wood is reinstated in a way that supports biodiversity, strengthens habitats, and leaves a positive legacy that aligns with our Woodland Management Plan.”
Construction on the pipeline is expected to be completed in Summer 2026 with reinstatement work being carried out throughout the following 12 months.
United Utilities is holding a series of community drop-in sessions for people interested in finding out more about the project. These are being held at Fleetwood Rugby Club between 10am and 7pm on 11th March, 15th April and 13th May.
