United Utilities teams up with Winsford takeaway to beat the block

A takeaway in Cheshire is encouraging others to do their bit for business and install a fat, oil and grease (FOG) trap to save thousands.

The owners of The Aroma Indian takeaway in Winsford, say they had the FOG trap installed after their business experienced a blockage outside the takeaway, which could have flooded the premises and cost thousands in repairs.

They said: “Installing the grease trap was a no-brainer. I was so surprised to see how much cooking fat and oil it stops from going down the drain.

“The grease traps are installed out of the way, usually under the sink, to catch all the fats and oils going down the drain. If it wasn’t there, the grease would be going down the drain and we would need to spend a lot of money unblocking it. Our business would need to close in order to do that – which is not what we need.”

The owners have praised United Utilities and their quick response and their advice with grease management, and would encourage other businesses across the North West to look into it.

“There is the upfront cost of the grease trap, but it’s a quick fit and you just need to stay on top of the maintenance – much less bother than paying for blockage removal or having to claim on your insurance if your business floods from backed up sewage. You’re also doing your bit for the environment and for your business - your livelihood. We have certainly benefitted from having it installed.”

Lewis Critch, from United Utilities agreed: “Our team is available to go out to food service businesses across the North West to support them on safe FOG disposal, so they don’t end up with a nasty surprise – be that flooding, or charges to remove the blockage.

“We can offer bespoke advice to each business on where their grease trap can be fitted and support them with aftercare of the trap if required.
