United Utilities investing £8.2m to boost water quality in River Ribble
A multi-million pound project to build a new Wastewater Treatment Works in the Ribble Valley is progressing well.
The brand new facility in Chipping will play an important role in improving water quality in Chipping Brook and the River Ribble.
Programme Manager Michael Tillery explained: “The new facility will have an increased capacity meaning it will treat a greater volume of wastewater more quickly.
“It will also feature new treatment methods which will improve the quality of the water that we release back into nearby Chipping Brook which is a tributary of the River Ribble.”
The updated wastewater treatment methods include will reduce levels of phosphorous and ammonia in the final effluent released from the facility.
The £8.2m project has been designed to cope with recent and future population growth in Chipping and is due to be completed in summer 2024.
Through its Better Rivers Better North West action plan, United Utilities is on track to improve almost 200km of rivers by 2025.
The company has also just been granted approval to make an early start on £900m of investment which means that investments in similar projects across the region can get underway before 2025.
