Ulverston storm overflow project completed

United Utilities has completed a project in Little Urswick, Ulverston to help improve water quality in Gleaston Beck which eventually flows into Morecambe Bay SSSI.

The North West’s water company has invested £150,000 to replace 112m of sewer after it was found groundwater was infiltrating its network.

The project took around three months to complete and it will reduce the number of times that a storm overflow in the area operates.

Andrew Kendall, Wastewater Business Leader for United Utilities in Cumbria, said: “Once we identified an issue with groundwater infiltrating the sewer network, our teams have worked quickly to identify a solution and carry the work out.

“This investment will help us to cut spills and improve water quality in Gleaston Beck.”

It comes as United Utilities embarks on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century.  The company will be spending more than £13bn over the next five years to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
