Project to upgrade Wigan’s water network set to get underway

A project to upgrade more than 2.5km of Wigan’s water network is set to get underway in the New Year.

The three-month project in the Haigh area of Wigan will start on January 5th.  It will see United Utilities investing more than £735,000 to replace ageing water mains replaced with new pipeline that is designed to last more than 100 years.

It is part of United Utilities £380m programme to upgrade more than 925km of water mains across the North West during the next five years. More than 200km of these will be in Greater Manchester.

Work is being carried out in New Road and Hall Lane. Where possible a trenchless method, where new pipeline is inserted inside the old, will be used. This reduces the need for extensive excavations and keeps disruption to a minimum.

The replacement mains are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations to help protect against burst and reduce leaks.

United Utilities is notifying customers in the area to let them know about the work. They are also reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked. If in doubt, customers should call 0345 672 3723.

Lindsay Page who heads up Water Services for United Utilities in Greater Manchester explained: “The improvements we are delivering to the water network in Wigan and across Greater Manchester will play an important role in ensuring we continue to deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come.

“As well as being designed to last more than 100 years, these new water mains are also built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations improving the resilience of our water network in the area.

“We know this type of work can be disruptive and we are doing all we can to keep that to a minimum.”

Contract partner Network Plus is carrying out the work on behalf of United Utilities. More information is available online at www.unitedutilities.com/new-water-pipes.
