Open events to showcase how Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme will keep water flowing
As initial work begins on the first phase to enhance the pipelines that deliver high quality water from Wales to the North West, United Utilities is hosting a series of open events for people to find out more about the project.
The Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme is a five-year scheme to clean and re-line the three parallel pipes that transport water from Lake Vyrnwy in north Wales to customers across Cheshire, Merseyside and the wider North West.
The project is split into three phases, and activity is now underway in the first section from Malpas to Tarporley to create the safe access points needed and prepare areas for the main construction work. United Utilities is inviting local residents to come and find out more at a series of drop-in events over the next few weeks, where staff from the water company can answer any questions and explain more about the project.
John Hilton, Programme Director at United Utilities, said: “The Vyrnwy Aqueduct is a fantastic example of innovative engineering and a crucial part of our regional infrastructure that keeps customers’ taps flowing with high quality water.
“The work to prepare the access sites in the first phase is now underway, so we want to give people in the area the chance to find out more and ask any questions they may have. Coming along to speak to us will help residents appreciate the scale of the project and the challenges we face, and also how vital this work is.
“This modernisation programme is just one of the many things we’re doing to ensure we can continue to provide a resilient and sustainable water supply to our customers across the North West for generations to come.”
Sessions will take place from 2pm to 7pm:
- Monday 13th February – Bickerton Village Hall, Long Lane, Bickerton SY14 8AU
- Tuesday 21st February – Victoria Jubilee Hall, High Street, Malpas SY14 8NN
- Thursday 23rd February (finishes at 6pm) – Peckforton and Beeston Village Hall, Quarrybank, Tarporley CW6 9UH
- Wednesday 1st March – Jessy Hughes Village Hall, Royal Lane, Eaton, Tarporley CW6 9XE
- Wednesday 8th March (finishes at 6pm) – Cotebrook Village Hall, Stable Lane, Cotebrook, Tarporley CW6 0JJ
People can drop in at any time to speak to someone from United Utilities, and there will be printed information available to take away.
Last year United Utilities announced that Avove has been appointed to carry out the work in the first phase of the Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme. The Chorley-based infrastructure services and engineering company will be working across all three of the pipelines – relining the two older cast iron pipes, and cleaning the newer steel one.
