Good news for homes in Hazel Grove affected by flooding

It’s a happier new year for some homeowners in Hazel Grove, Stockport with the announcement that work has started on a scheme to reduce the risk of their homes being flooded.

Regional water firm, United Utilities, began work in January to build a new underground storm storage tank, pumping station and sewer at the bottom of Holiday Lane, Hazel Grove which will divert excess rainwater and sewage to Hazel Grove treatment works and protect Brookdale Cottages from sewer flooding.

Before beginning work, the company carried out ecological, arboricultural and archaeological surveys to help plan the pipe route through wooded areas.

United Utilities’ Harry Caton said: “We’ve carefully planned this project to ensure minimal inconvenience to the local community and, despite Covid restrictions, have kept residents up to date with progress. 

“To reduce the impact of construction traffic along Holiday Lane, we will create a temporary new access from our compound site to our working area. We don’t require traffic management on the busy Marple Road and we will be positioning our equipment to minimise noise to neighbouring properties.”

Stockport Councillor, Wendy Meikle, commented: “This is essential work, it might not be particularly noticeable to the public, but it’s vital to protect the residents of Brookdale cottages from flooding.

“I’ve been very pleased with the communication I’ve had from United Utilities who have kept me up to date with progress on the project.

“The project itself is causing very little disruption to residents with extra parking facilities arranged and the replacement of trees that have been removed to allow excavation.”

Sewer flooding occurs when heavy rainfall overwhelms the sewer network causing sewer contents to overflow onto roads and sometimes into properties.

This £5m project is part of a wider programme aimed at improving the lives of homeowners whose properties are at risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
