Delamere residents invited to learn more about £260m Vyrnwy aqueduct
United Utilities is inviting residents in parts of Cheshire to learn more about its plans to upgrade an aqueduct that runs through the county.
Residents in Delamere, Hatchmere and Frodsham can find out about latest phases of work that are due to be carried out on the Vyrnwy aqueduct that will help to safeguard water supplies for decades to come.
The Vyrnwy aqueduct transports drinking water from Lake Vyrnwy in Wales to a million customers across Cheshire and Merseyside. A £260m investment to upgrade 110km of drinking water pipes through the Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme (VAMP) started in 2023 and is due to be complete in 2028.
Work is currently underway between Tarpoley and Norton, upgrading 52.8Km of pipeline. Construction is already underway in parts of Tarporley, and works to relocate 120m of pipe on the junction of Blakemere Lane, Delamere Road, Ashton Road and School Lane will start on 30 March. Customer water supplies will remain uninterrupted while the work is carried out, and pedestrian access will remain in place throughout the works, and a clear diversion route for traffic has been advertised.
United Utilities has also been working closely with Delamere Community Association to support local investment, by carrying out upgrades to the community centre carpark and supporting with Spring bulb planting, new community signage and sponsorship for charity events. While the works continue, environmental improvements will also be delivered in partnership with Littlewoods (Bowyer's Waste), which will include vegetation chipping and drainage improvements.
United Utilities has organised five events for the community to find out more information about the project and ask any questions they may have.
