Meet Carly, our capital delivery intern
Carly is currently studying Psychology at Loughborough University and is in her third year placement. She will be returning to University in September to complete her final year.
What is your favourite thing about your internship?
The best thing about being an intern at United Utilities is that there are so many exciting opportunities available. I have had the pleasure of working in the capital delivery department where I’ve had the chance to work on some major projects, something that many people won’t get the chance to do so early on in their career. Whilst doing this I have also worked alongside numerous highly experienced individuals who have taught me some invaluable lessons about working in the industry. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and I would love to come back in the near future.
How has the internship helped your develop your skills?
Working at United Utilities has been an eye opening experience for me. I have learnt how to apply my skills in a professional environment and I have gained a lot more confidence in my own abilities. Being able to develop skills such as collecting and working with data will massively help me when I return to university to complete my degree, particularly as I begin researching for my dissertation. I have also improved on my written and verbal communication skills, which will really help when I begin applying for graduate jobs in the coming months. This experience has given me a lot more confidence about beginning my career after university, and it has also excited me about my future career aspirations.
What does your day at work look like?
Many of the roles, including my own, allow you to work in a hybrid way. This means that some days I can work from home and others I can work from the office, so you get the best of both worlds! I will usually work from the office when I have planned any face-to-face meetings, or if I want to meet up with some of my colleagues. I usually check my meeting schedule the day before, so that I know what’s on my agenda for the following day. I will then plan my workload and prioritise certain tasks which need to get done around meetings times in my diary. However, one thing I love about working at United Utilities is that no two working days are the same. Each day presents new challenges and there is a lot of flexibility in my role to get involved in many different departments and tasks.
What is your favourite thing about working at United Utilities?
The best thing about working at here is the people. As soon as I started my role in September everyone made me feel extremely welcome and part of the team. I have always felt supported and valued and I know there will always be someone in the team available to answer any of my questions (even if I did have hundreds of them when I started). It is a friendly workplace with many opportunities for both career and personal development. United Utilities also has a great reputation as an employer and being able to network in a company like this has been invaluable.
After your experience at United Utilities, would you consider looking for a permanent role after you have finished your degree?
Definitely! I would love to come back on the graduate scheme once I have finished my degree at university. I have had the chance to speak to a few of the graduates myself and they cannot speak highly enough of the scheme. After enjoying my time here so much and seeing how many different roles and opportunities are on offer I would love to return and begin my career at such a reputable company.
