Application process

Throughout our graduate recruitment we use different selection techniques to enable us to find out more about you and your strengths, while also giving you the opportunity to find out more about us. Ultimately this helps us ensure we recruit the best person for the job.

Below you can see examples of the different stages you may be asked to participate in.

Stage 1: Online application

Once you've decided which role to apply for, complete the aplication form.

Stage 2: Online tests

Once we've reviewed your application form, you will be asked to complete an online verbal and numerical reasoning test, through our recruitment partner, SHL.

Stage 3: Interview

You will be invited to attend an interview either in person or over MS Teams. You may be asked to prepare a presentation and to present on the day. This is for us to get to know you better and the type of skills you can bring to us.

Stage 4: Assessment centre

This is your opportunity to demonstrate your skills and experience, and for you to learn about the programme and United Utilities.

Stage 5: Our offer to you

If you get to this stage - congratulations! When you get an offer, we'll need to see your references, proof that you can work in the UK, proof of your qualifications and medical clearance to prove that you're fit for the job - literally!

Stage 6: Keeping in touch

You will be invited to a "Keep in Touch Day" to meet with your fellow graduates and to meet your new team.

Successful candidates will start with us in September 2026.

  • Deadlines

    Remember to make a note of the deadline ahead of time. You will need to make sure you have fully completed your application and submitted it to us by the closing date. Please note that deadlines may be changed at short notice depending on volume of applications received.  Unfortunately, we can’t accept any late applications.

    Your application form

    Use full answers to demonstrate why you are applying for the role and why you would like to work for United Utilities. Our roles receive lots of applications so it’s really important to showcase your skills and stand out from the crowd. Try to include your achievements and explain how the skills you have relate to the role that you are applying for and how that will benefit us.

  • The documents we can accept to establish your right to work are set out by the Home Office. There are two lists of acceptable documents - List A and List B. List A and List B documents are published here (PDF 272 KB opens in new window).

    It's important that you show a proof of address, we can't accept photocopies of documents. Here is a list of documents we accept as proof of address (PDF 226 KB opens in a new window).

    You must show original documentation, or a combination of documents, specified in one of the lists to prove your eligibility to work in the UK.
