Apprentice answers

What’s your story - how did you end up applying for an apprenticeship?

After gaining electrical qualifications, from a course I was previously enrolled on, I felt the need to develop practical skills and knowledge. An apprenticeship was the best way to couple the theory aspect with hands-on and on-site experience.

What attracted to you to an apprenticeship at your water company instead of somewhere else?

Among the various things that attracted me to an apprenticeship with UU, the inclusive nature of the company stood out to me the most. For example, on my first day at Bolton Training Centre, my tutor, without any prompt from myself, directed me to a place where I could perform my prayers. Before applying, I was informed, by current employees, that the company is truly accommodating and inclusive and I can safely say I have found it as such.

What are you most proud of about your apprenticeship?

Being an apprentice FSE in instrumentation, I have started to realise the importance of instrumentation, control and automation in running UU sites efficiently. I am proud to be part of the maintenance team that are responsible for maintaining the biggest wastewater site that UU have – Davyhulme WWTW. Working with my mentor to ensure the smooth running of the site is a great responsibility which I am proud to have. I look
forward to developing my skills and experience to be able to further help maintain and run the site.

What surprised you most about your apprenticeship?

I have been surprised by the amount of help and support on offer with regards to different topics such as work, health, finance and life in general. Whether it be online courses, helplines or weekly/monthly gatherings, there are many alternative routes to find help and support. The management and leaders of departments are accessible and approachable to assist with any query you have. Whenever I have any issue or query, be it work-related or personal, I know where to look and who to go to which is something I can’t say I have always had in other workplaces.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about their future or starting an apprenticeship?

To anyone thinking about starting an apprenticeship, I would say think no further. An apprenticeship is a great way to kickstart your career with a mix of knowledge based learning and valuable on-site experience. I completed my level 2 and 3 in Electrical Installation prior to my apprenticeship with UU however I very quickly realised the need for practical hands-on experience if I wanted to excel further in this field. My apprenticeship is bridging that gap and I feel more competent and confident in my role as a whole.
