Apprentice answers
What’s your story - how did you end up applying for an apprenticeship?
Coming straight from school and completing my GCSEs I was in a position most people are in, not knowing what to do and where my career path was headed. I was looking for a way to gain practical skills while working, and an apprenticeship seemed like the perfect fit for me.
What attracted to you to an apprenticeship at your water company instead of somewhere else?
I did some research and found that United Utilities offers a great apprenticeship programme with so many perks that I didn’t want to miss out on. I was particularly invested in the way United Utilities values and promotes their apprentices all year round. I knew that if I was given the opportunity to work for the company I would be provided with valuable experience which will last me a lifetime.
The chance to earn while I learn and gain a qualification at the same time really attracted me to the role too. The reputation, proven on the leaderboards, for United Utilities apprenticeship programme also stood out to me.
I wanted to be part of a company that invests in their apprentices. The training facilities United Utilities have to offer are great. Before I had even started the role I drove up to Bolton Training Centre to see what I was in for, and I was very excited. Before applying I watched day in the life videos on YouTube featuring United Utilities employees and I knew this is where I wanted to be and where I wanted my career to kickstart. I have no regrets.
What are you most proud of about your apprenticeship?
I’ve been here since September 2022. Having experienced many roles with a variety of colleagues I’m proud of the practical skills and customer skills I have built up. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the real-world impact that you have as a part of what you do for customers. I can’t wait to gain this qualification with my end-point assessment being in May. The blend of learning whilst I earn has not only boosted my confidence at work but has given me a strong foundation improve myself at work further and further every day.
What surprised you most about your apprenticeship?
The level of support and mentorship from my trainers and managers around me has truly put me at ease in my learning phase. My apprenticeship so far has been very eye-opening. They’ve been easily approachable for when you need help and are more than willing to share their knowledge and experience. The guidance from my colleagues at United Utilities has made it easier to navigate through new challenges I’m faced with and learn new skills effectively. I appreciate and am surprised by, how they take the time to provide constructive feedback and encourage me to ask questions which for me, creates an environment where I feel valued and supported which is hard to come by with companies, never mind apprenticeships these days.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about their future or starting an apprenticeship?
I’d advise anyone thinking about their future or starting an apprenticeship to consider what they’re passionate about and what skills they want to develop. Like me, it’s important to research on the company you’re applying for to make sure it’s what you want. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the application process or even reach out to current apprentices for their insights. Stay curious and proactive, give it a shot as you’ll never know how far you can get until you apply! I applied to United Utilities, I absolutely love it and you will too.
