Meet Charlotte, newly qualified network asset engineer

Charlotte has recently finished her four-year apprenticeship, training to become a Network Asset Engineer. From a young age, Charlotte knew she wanted to go into engineering. She shares her experiences and what she’s now doing at United Utilities.

“I chose United Utilities to begin my career as it’s a huge corporation that’s widely recognised across the North West and it’s also a secure career path to take. You’re able to prosper in United Utilities and it’s a career for life! Water after all is a vital commodity and I’m proud to be a part of helping our customers.

“I wanted to make sure I chose the right apprenticeship for me, so I decided to do the Network Asset Engineer Level 3 apprenticeship. I wanted to pursue a career in the engineering industry because I’ve always had an interest in how things are made, especially cars – but that’s another story! I knew from a young age I wanted to go into engineering.

“I absolutely loved my apprenticeship as I feel it helped me develop my practical skills, as well as gaining the vital qualifications. It also helped me develop as a person, helping me grow more confident and independent. I made new friends at United Utilities and the company opened many doors for me by giving me a variety of opportunities.

“I took part in a lot of activities outside my role, such as the Brathay Challenge 2014 and becoming an active ambassador for the company at award ceremonies, such as at the Women in Business Awards and Future Power Women Awards. I was also fortunate to be invited down to London to the houses of Parliament to represent United Utilities apprentices. During my apprenticeship I was able to work in many areas across the Wastewater Network, which helped me gain more experience when working with different electricians. If I could do my apprenticeship again, I would! 

“Since working for United Utilities for five years, I’ve achieved a Level 2 and 3 BTEC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Maintenance. I’ve also have a HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, achieving Double Distinction for both BTEC and HNC, which I’m incredibly proud of.

“I’ve been a fully qualified Network Asset Engineer in Electrical for a year now in the North Mersey maintenance team. My primary responsibilities are working on wastewater pumping stations within the district, which include private pumping stations on our customers’ properties.

“My future goals are to move up the career ladder in United Utilities. I would like to go into Project Management and then one day be a senior leader in the engineering field.”
