Lancashire

Lancashire is home to some of the region’s most beautiful features. We boast some of the best bathing beaches in the UK spanning from Lytham to Morecambe, popular amongst both local residents and visitors to the region.

The county’s beautiful and expansive countryside is carved by many rivers drained from the Pennines, including the Ribble, Wyre and Lune, all of which drain to the west of the county, and enter the Irish Sea.

With a largely coastal geography, bathing water quality is a priority for customers in Lancashire.

Each year, we invest millions of pounds in maintaining and improving our rivers, bathing water quality, and water supply network, to make sure it’s the best it can be.

We have embarked on an ambitious journey to make the North West greener, healthier and stronger. We are investing in our assets across Lancashire to ensure the best water quality.

We’ve already made significant progress in Lancashire including the completion of the £164 million rebuild of Blackburn wastewater treatment works.

The scheme, which included a new transfer pipeline between Darwen and Blackburn, has seen the installation of a revolutionary wastewater treatment technology known as Nereda.

Serving 400,000 people, the Blackburn site is now the largest purpose-built Nereda process plant in Europe.

Lancashire is also part of the UK’s biggest hi-tech drainage community thanks to United Utilities.

Around 30 homes in Forton, including the local primary school, have received smart water butts and are taking part in a 12-month trial to reduce flooding in the area and stop sewers from becoming overloaded during periods of heavy rainfall.

We’re proud of the work we do in Lancashire, and a lot is going on. Find out more using the links below:

If you’re experiencing flooding from a road or footpath and there is no evidence of sewage (toilet paper etc.) please report this to your local council, who are responsible for highways drainage flooding.

Please be aware that our phone lines are much busier than normal, take a look at our flooding page for further advice on what to do if you’re affected by flooding.
