Madeley Wastewater Treatment Works

Once the used water from your sink or toilet goes down the drain, out job begins to help transport it along a huge network of sewer pipes to one of over 560 treatment works, before it's clean enough to return to the natural environment.

We're constantly looking for ways to improve our treatment sites to make sure that the quality of water that's returned to rivers and the sea is as clean as possible.  We're planning some work in your area which will help to improve the quality of treated water that is returned to local watercourses.

Our proposed improvements at Madeley Wastewater Treatment Works involves upgrading existing assets and building additional new equipment, so we can treat the water to an even higher standard.

As the water company for the North West, the majority of our proposed work can be carried out with agreement from the local authority however, there are some elements of work which require formal planning permission. Our Planning submission can be viewed on Staffordshire County Council website, under ref; SCC/22/0095/FULL-MAJ. Thank you to all residents who took the time to provide feedback on our plans prior to us submitting to the council.

  • Our plans to improve Madeley Wastewater Treatment Works include building new treament tanks ,supporting equipment and a new storage tank near the existing site entrance at Lea Lane.

Overview plans which illustrate the proposed improvements and location of new apparatus can be seen in the overview drawing.

We've carried out a range of environmental surveys and groundwork investigations to help develop our proposed solution. These plans also include shrub planting around the new equipment on completion of the proposed work. Our proposed landscaping drawing has further details.

  • We'll create a temporary compound area within the existing site boundary to accommodate our team, materials and construction equipment during the project.

This type of work will require the use of machinery which will create noise and vibrations.  There will be additional traffic on the local road network as we receive deliveries. An integral part of our planning includes the development of a traffic management plan to ensure disruption to the local community and road network is minimised as much as possible.

Wash, flush...carry on as normal. Don't worry, you will still be able to use all your existing appliances or facilities that take away the used water from your home or business just as you usually would whilst we carry out the work.

  • We have now submitted a planning application to Staffordshire County Council under ref: SCC/22/0095/FULL-MAJ. We're hoping to be able to begin the improvement work in March 2023 and expect it would take around eighteen months to finish all the work.

We understand that construction work can be inconvenient and you may have comments or queries about our plans.  If you need to get in touch, you can complete our feedback form or if you prefer, please give our friendly team a call on 0345 672 3723 and quote project number 80061393.  We'll be happy to help.

  • We're making improvements to help the site operate more efficiently and improve the quality of water released back into the natural environment, but problems in the sewers can often be caused by flushing wet wipes down the loo, or pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink.
