Monster found in Liverpool sewer!
The North West's biggest ever fatberg has been discovered deep underground in a sewer in Liverpool.
Measuring a whopping 250 metres, this sewer monster is formed from a congealed mass of fats, grease, oil, wet wipes, sanitary products, and other items that shouldn’t have been poured down the sink or flushed down the loo.
See how we're tackling this giant 400 tonne terror below.
The biggest fatberg in the North West
Banish the fatberg
The 400 tonne fatberg is caused by a combination of cooking fats, grease and other items such as wet wipes. Our sewer systems are only designed for water, toilet paper and human waste to flow through and not the increasing volume of fat and other items such as wet wipes which are contributing to over 25,000 sewer blockages in the North West every year.
How can you help?
We can all do our bit to get rid of these gruesome monsters, it’s so easy to banish the fatberg! Simply spread the word to only flush the 3Ps – pee, paper and poo down the toilet and not pouring fats, oil and grease (FOG) down the drain.
How do fatbergs affect you?
Fatbergs block our sewerage system which can wreak havoc in homes and businesses. These blockages stop sewage passing through the pipe - eventually forcing the wretched smelly gunk back up to escape wherever it can onto roads, gardens and homes.
Help us fight the fatbergs!
Think before you flush
Avoid a blockage by only flushing the three ps - pee, poo and (toilet) paper!
Think before you pour
That bit of grease from the roasting pan, the leftover food on the plate you rinse under the tap - it all adds up.
