£77.7 million upgrade to Burnley Wastewater Treatment Works
Overview
A £77 million upgrade to Burnley’s Wastewater Treatment Works will enable the facility to meet growing demand created by population growth in the area. This will reduce the number of times the storm overflows are operated and it will also enhance the water quality in the River Calder.
Challenge
The existing facility wasn’t designed to deal with the growing population in the area. As well as reducing the number of times that storm overflows operate, the project will also improve the quality of the water that is released from the facility at the end of the treatment process.
Solution
A major overhaul of the facility which will see the introduction of new treatment processes and additional storm water storage.
The upgrade will enable the facility to meet growing demand from Burnley and surrounding towns by increasing capacity by 27%. The increase in capacity and the introduction of more storm water storage will also reduce the number of times that storm overflows operate in periods of heavy rain.
Outcome
A £77 million upgrade to Burnley’s Wastewater Treatment Works will enable the facility to meet growing demand created by population growth in the area. This will reduce the number of times the storm overflows are operated and it will also enhance the water quality in the River Calder.
Projects like this will form part of our commitment to create better rivers. We are planning on investing £729 million to reduce spills from 91 storm overflows in Lancashire, as part of a proposed £13.7 billon investment to make a stronger, greener, healthier North West.
