Climate change
We’re seeing more rainfall which can overwhelm the wastewater systems, causing sewer flooding in the village and spills from the storm overflow at the wastewater treatment works.
We are making a head start on a multi-million-pound, multi-faceted solution to help reduce storm water spills at Staveley wastewater treatment works and to address sewer flooding in Staveley village.
Here's our three-step plan to tackle the complex challenges:
The solution for Staveley will require input from our partners and stakeholders and we are working closely with the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Lake District National Park (LDNP) in particular.
We’re seeing more rainfall which can overwhelm the wastewater systems, causing sewer flooding in the village and spills from the storm overflow at the wastewater treatment works.
Most of the sewer network takes foul and rainwater due to the period when Staveley developed. Rainwater doesn’t need to be treated and should go direct to a watercourse.
An increase in homes, businesses and tourists has seen an additional strain on the sewer network.
Staveley has two main rivers designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and is surrounded by steep hillside. These factors make drainage management more complex.
