Encourage our employees to get involved and make a positive contribution to local communities.
We believe that employee volunteering is an effective way of developing the skills, confidence and talents of our people, supporting local communities and building trust with residents.
Employees who want to get involved are allowed three days to volunteer in the local community.
In 2015/16, more than 500 employees delivered more than 3000 volunteering hours on company time – the equivalent to a £60,000 investment by our business.
Volunteering activities include:
- Talks and workshops in secondary schools to encourage study and careers in Science, Technology, Education and Maths (STEM)
- Environmental projects such as tree planting, beach cleaning and scrub clearance.
We regularly work with our partners to organise dedicated volunteering days for different teams in the business.
These partners include:
RSPB: a long-standing partner with whom we are working on a project at Dovestone Reservoir in Saddleworth to improve the catchment land surrounding our reservoir.
BeachCare: a consortium featuring ourselves, Keep Britain Tidy and the Environment Agency, working along the Fylde coast to improve bathing water quality.
Groundwork: working to preserve the culturally significant landscape at Rivington Terraced Gardens near Bolton.
Our volunteering activities are an essential part of a wider programme of community investment which last year totalled £1.8 million.
