Learning & development
We are committed to helping colleagues meet their full potential through a wide range of training and personal development opportunities.
Supporting staff in their own progression is not only vital for job satisfaction, it helps to ensure we are delivering a consistently high quality service to our customers.
Each year, we develop a training plan based on business and personal development needs. We measure employee competencies across our business using an assessment tool that allows us to prioritise any training interventions.
In 2015/16, we delivered more than 21,000 employee training days. In addition, our internal, online learning portal averages 2,500 visits per month, and provides career guidance and skills development support.
Following the opening of the Bolton Technical Training Centre (pictured) in 2015, the delivery base for our own accredited technical programmes, the site continues to grow and is now in its next development phase to enable us to deliver ICA (Instrumentation, Control and Automation) apprenticeships.
We use an external provider to canvass employees’ views on our training provisions and latest results showed that 64 per cent were actively engaged in learning and development. Compared with external benchmarks, this is above the UK average in the area of personal development and growth.
Last year we were recognised with several industry awards including:
- Regional winner of the National Apprenticeship Service Macro Employer of the Year (2015)
- Top 100 Employer of Apprenticeships
- HR Distinction Award for the UU Apprenticeship programme
- Water Industry Skills Employer of the Year Institute of Water 2016 President's Dinner and Awards
