Invest in education programmes both in schools and the wider community.

Many aspects of our work translate well to a classroom setting – from water resource management to bathing water quality.

We run a varied educational programme, aimed at primary and secondary school children. Our focus is on delivering fun, interactive lessons which tie into the National Curriculum and are memorable for pupils and teachers.

Key activities include:

EducationWater efficiency workshops: we deliver water efficiency workshops in primary schools across our region to children aged 5 to 11. The interactive sessions provide an introduction to the water table, the environmental importance of saving water, not flushing the wrong things down the loo and practical tips for the home and garden.

We measure the number of children participating in these workshops every academic year. The data is provided by our education provider, Kingfisher Education Services.

We have also developed a fun online educational resource. By reaching pupils at a young age, we hope they will retain a lifelong appreciation that water is a precious resource which should be conserved, not wasted.

Bathing waters: the quality of our coastal waters is becoming an increasingly prominent issue, as new EU regulations come into force in 2015. We have plans to incorporate bathing water messages into our water efficiency workshops where schools are in coastal regions.

Similarly, the LOVEmyBEACH campaign for better bathing water quality (in which we are an active participant) has developed a learning pack for Key Stage 1 and 2 children, focused on protecting and enhancing our beaches and bathing waters.

Career advice: we are an active participant in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) programme, which encourages students to consider future careers in these underrepresented areas. Our employees volunteer their time to support the initiative by visiting careers fairs and secondary schools to promote technical roles in the water industry.

We are also partners with a Warrington based college called the Future Tech Studio which offers a new and innovative approach to education for 14-19 year olds, specialising in IT & Telecommunications, Business & Finance and Engineering. We’ll be offering work experience places to students, as part of the partnership.

Secondary Education Interactive: we are developing an online learning site which covers the key subjects; Engineering, Construction and Geography. The subjects are brought to life by applying them to real world examples and case studies from across our business. It contains videos, photos and other downloadable material to enhance learning.
