Taking action in Staveley

22 Mar 2024

We are making a head start on a multi-million-pound, multi-faceted solution to help reduce storm water spills at Staveley wastewater treatment works and to address sewer flooding in Staveley village.

Here's our three-step plan to tackle the complex challenges:

  1. Increasing capacity at Staveley treatment works by 50% through adapting the inlet to the works and installing new pipework and pumps. We expect these works to be complete by September 2024 and that they will reduce spills by an estimated 35%.
  1. Removing surface water through:
    • funding water butts for all Staveley residents
    • finding SUDS pods at the local school and other suitable locations across the village, such as the community centre
    • supporting a local Council-led project at Brow Lane to remove surface water
  1. Modelling and designing an integrated solution which will include:
    • CCTV-ing the entire local sewer network to understand current flow behaviours
    • installing sewer monitors to collect data about flow through the network – in place until August 2024
    • collecting initial findings and release of CCTV data in March/April 2024
    • collecting findings from flow monitoring and release of data in September 2024
    • sharing our proposed solution design in November/December 2024

The solution for Staveley will require input from our partners and stakeholders and we are working closely with the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Lake District National Park (LDNP) in particular.
